{"id":97494,"date":"2022-03-17T15:33:01","date_gmt":"2022-03-17T15:33:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cloudcomputing-news.net\/?p=97494"},"modified":"2025-04-23T08:57:57","modified_gmt":"2025-04-23T07:57:57","slug":"ovhcloud-submits-antitrust-complaint-on-microsofts-eu-cloud-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cloudcomputing-news.net\/news\/ovhcloud-submits-antitrust-complaint-on-microsofts-eu-cloud-services\/","title":{"rendered":"OVHcloud submits antitrust complaint on Microsoft&#8217;s EU cloud services"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>OVHcloud, a French cloud computing company, has filed an antitrust complaint against Microsoft to the EU\u2019s top competition regulator, the European Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The complaint, first reported on by the Wall Street Journal, focuses on Microsoft\u2019s licencing of its products, such as its Office software suite. It was filed last summer but has only recently come to light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OVHcloud says this licencing makes it more expensive to use cloud services that compete with Microsoft Azure and that Microsoft\u2019s software doesn\u2019t work as well on other cloud services either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A spokesperson for OVHcloud told the Wall Street Journal: \u201cThrough abusing its dominant position, Microsoft undermines fair competition and limits consumer choice in the cloud computing services market.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The French cloud firm added that the complaint was filed jointly with a number of other companies, but chose not to name which.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent years, Microsoft has largely avoided government scrutiny whilst other big tech companies have faced plenty. A 2020 report by the US House Antitrust Subcommittee targeted the other four big US tech giants \u2013 Apple, Amazon, Meta, and Google-parent Alphabet \u2013 in a 16-month market power inquest but left Microsoft alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>European lawmakers are not being so slack. Whilst Microsoft does not hold a dominant position in Europe\u2019s cloud market, there are worries that the company\u2019s strength in Office and Outlook could propel it forward through unfair advantages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft got in legal trouble for bundling practices into its operating system in the 1990s. In 2020, business messaging app Slack complained to the EU about Microsoft\u2019s bundling of Teams\u2019 rival product with its widely used Office software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OVHcloud, which <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cloudcomputing-news.net\/news\/2021\/sep\/22\/ovhcloud-seeking-e400m-in-euronext-ipo-before-years-end\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">went public<\/a><\/strong> in October last year, has struggled to compete with the dominance of US cloud service providers.
